I modified the code to follow our newest guidelines: If an airport does not have an official ICAO identifier, but does have an IATA or local aviation authority code, it will still need a unique ICAO identifier on the Gateway and in X-Plane. The format for designing these codes should be: X (for fictitious code) + country ICAO prefix + IATA or local aviation authority code.

Does this mean that instead of simply typing CPF6 when choosing an airport, a user types XCYCPF6?

....accidentally posted incomplete comment, sorry.
or is that long code a Xplane Gateway reference?

For now, that long code would be how people find the airport by "identifier" in X-Plane or the Gateway.
X-Plane requires a unique identifier for an airport. Typically we use the ICAO identifier when available. In the past we have used any official code (FAA, local aviation auth., etc) in the field if we did not have an ICAO, but we have changed that policy to the one on the NOTAMs page.
In the long term, we are adding the ability to search by any type of identifier in the Gateway or the sim. Once that happens, XCYCPF6 will become just X-Plane's unique identifier for the airport, and people will also be able to find it by CPF6 (the local aviation authority code).
